VIÑA DEL MAR
ATTRACTIONS
Beaches and parks. A relaxing itinerary is offered to visitors by Viña
del Mar, the beach city that boasts of the beauty of its
sea, the gentleness of its waves and the warmth of its people, always
wearing a ready smile for its visitors.
Whether on its beaches or its streets, Viña del Mar
has much to offer the traveler. A visit to the following places
is recommended:
Quinta Vergara, this was the home of Viña
del Mar's founder, Jose Francisco Vergara Echevers, and
currently hosts the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts, which serves
as a backdrop for the Viña del Mar February International
Song Festival, one of Latin America's most prestigious and important
music contests.
Rioja Palace, this is a beautiful French-style
mansion which has been declared a National Monument. It contains
the Environmental Museum, and has an open-air theater, swimming
pool, tennis courts, stables and a riding school. It belongs to
the Viña del Mar Municipality.
Mt Castillo, this affords an excellent panoramic
view of Viña del Mar. It looks like a storybook medieval citadel,
because that is where some of the most luxurious and traditional
palaces and castles in the "Garden City" were built last century,
among them the imposing Presidential Palace. The "Castillo" also
boasts the famous "Flower Clock".
Valparaiso Street, is the city's business and trade
center and offers the visitor a variety of local mementoes. The
Florida Gallery, a plaza with important shops and coffeehouses is
a main feature.
Cultura del Mar Museum ("Sea Life Museum"), exhibits
an interesting collection of seafaring items that, in one way or
another, reflect the history of the city and the resort it has turned
into. It is located in a two-storey building with attached tower
that was built in 1880 by Gustavo Adolfo Wulff Mowle, for which
reason it is known as the Wulff Castle.
Peru Avenue, connects the Estero and Acapulco beaches.
This roadway, built in 1930, is traversed by dozens of pedestrians
who wish to view the wonderful sunsets in Viña del Mar.
