The ordinary telephone service is both efficient and easy to access, enabling you to dial local and international numbers directly, even from public phones, to do which you may use cards or coins in circulation (100 Chilean pesos). The country code of Chile is 56 and the area code of Santiago, the capital, is 02.

In Chile there are a number of telephone companies that offer differential tariffs for national and international calls, depending on the time of day they are made.

The traveler may also make or receive calls in hotels or other lodgings, because most of them provide a phone in your room. In these cases, the service includes a surcharge.

However, in shopping malls one usually finds "locutorios" (telephone centers) from which reverse charge calls can be made, prepaid call cards can be bought, and information on local and international codes can be obtained.

Mobile or Cell Phones are widespread throughout the country. There are also organizations from which these phones can be hired. To communicate with a mobile phone, you have to previously dial 09 from an ordinary phone or 9 from a mobile phone.
