USEFUL INFORMATION
AROUND THE CITY

Taxi
Taxis in Chile are black with a yellow roof. They
do not have prearranged stops, so they can be boarded -day or night-
at any street corner. The units are all supplied with a meter, and
the "flag-down" charge starts at 150 and 170 pesos (day or night
tariff) with an extra 80 pesos every 200 meters.
In cities such as Santiago, taxi service is provided in several modes, namely:
- "Taxi colectivo" (Collective taxi), the units cover fixed routes, in the same way as city buses. They take up to five passengers and show their tariff on the windshield. They are identified by a special signboard on the roof.
- "Radio taxi", this service is requested by phone. The unit picks up the passenger at the place and time he/she specifies. They can also be boarded directly in the street like normal taxis. They operate round the clock.
- "Taxi de turismo" (Tourism Taxi), their stops are located near the hotels. They provide a higher quality service, but the units -painted blue in this case- are not provided with meters, so fares must be prearranged with the driver.
Urban Bus Services
These buses are locally known as "micros". The units are yellow and white, and bear a number on the windscreen identifying the line. The normal bus ticket costs 3.10 pesos.
This is the city's most efficient, rapid and safe transport system. It operates from Monday through Saturday from 6.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m., and on Sundays and holidays from 8 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.
Tariffs vary according to the time of day you enter the system. From 7.15 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 to 7.30 p.m. the ticket costs 400 pesos, and from 6.30 a.m. to 7.15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. the tariff drops to 320 pesos.
The Santiago subway service has three lines:
- Red Line, from west to east, through the downtown area. It runs along Avenida B. O' Higgins, Avenida Providencia and Avenida Apoquindo.
- Yellow Line, from downtown to the southwest. It runs along the Gran Avenida.
- Green Line, from downtown to the southeast. It runs along Avenida Vicuña Mackenna.
