We will continue toward the region of the Akahanga Ahu, whose legend goes that the tomb of the famous King Hotu Matua is located beside the Ahu. We then continue toward one of the most important places of Rapa Nui culture, the quarry of Rano Raraku, located on the slopes of the homonymous volcano, where a total of approx. 900 statues were carved, 397 of which are still lying or standing on different moments of their construction and transportation process. We will then go to the Tongariki Ahu, restored in 1995, with its 15 standing statues. After that we will visit the archaeological remains known as The Navel of the World. We will continue bound for the Vinapu Ahu, with its architecture reminding us of pre-Incan constructions. Towards the end of this excursion we will visit the Ana Kai Tangata Cave, where it is possible to appreciate rock paintings with seabird motifs. Return to your hotel.
In the afternoon we will have a half-day tour visiting the Akivi Ahu, archeological center in the Roihi Sector; it was the first one restored scientifically in the 1960s. It is a particularly interesting ceremonial place not only because of its location (center of the island), but also because of the legends regarding its seven Moai, which represent the first seven explorers sent by King Hotu Matua to scout the island.
We will continue to the caverns of Ana Tepahu and the quarry of Puna Pau, a place located east of Hanga Roa, a small crater of red stones, from where the pukao or headwear crowning the Moai were obtained. There are some unfinished and abandoned Moai along its ancient trails of removal.

Useful Information

WEATHER
Santiago has a mild weather with Mediterranean hints. Thermometers can reach 30º C in summer – December to March –, while there are short though intense rain showers in winter – June to August –. The annual average is of 14º C
The City of Valparaiso has a subtropical weather, with an average temperature of 20° C

Easter Island has a subtropical weather, influenced by marine currents and winds, with an annual average temperature of 20° C It rains throughout the year though sporadically and for short periods on the Island of the Rapa Nui – another name for Easter Island –. May is the month with the most pluvial precipitations.

In the southern region the weather is mild and rainy during the winter. It rains occasionally in summer, although around 70% of the days are sunny. Temperatures rarely exceed of 28° C in summer and in winter maximums are close to 15° C.

WHAT TO PACK
It is recommendable to pack all sorts of clothes, since it is very cold in winter in the capital city and temperatures can climb up to 30º C in summer. For San Pedro de Atacama it is advisable to pack light cotton clothes, t-shirts, short pants, bathing suit, shades, sunscreen and caps for the scorching hours; and jackets, sweaters, coats, gloves, thick socks and other warm garments that will allow you to manage the low temperatures on the night and high-altitude excursions.
Easter Island has a mild weather though pretty warm in summer (December to March) and rather cool in winter. Always include a light parka or waterproof cape for the frequent rain showers, sunscreen, bathing suit, sun cap and a warming jacket in winter. For Puerto Varas and Chiloé, warm and waterproof clothes are advisable, wool cap and gloves in winter and rather light clothes for summer, without ever forgetting a waterproof jacket for the rain.

WATER
There is fresh water in almost the entire territory, although for those unused to tap water and in rural areas, it is advisable to drink bottled water.

HEALTH
Santiago has an important network of clinics, hospitals and medical centers, which have emergency service in most cases. San Pedro de Atacama has neither clinics nor hospitals, there is only a medic post located in the plaza, which is equipped to respond to basic needs. Therefore, you would have to go the Dr. Carlos Cisternas Hospital, located in the homonymous avenue in the City of Calama in case of a major emergency.
On the island we can find several hospitals and clinics, though one of the most recommended is the Hanga Roa Hospital, which has the necessary implements to perform surgeries and respond to emergencies 24 hours a day. Besides, it has dental and pharmaceutical services. It is advisable to carry your basic and frequent-use medications with you, since there is not much to choose from on the island. In the southern zone you will have no problems regarding medical attention, be it in Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt or Chiloé, where you will find excellent clinics and hospitals.

CHILEAN GASTRONOMY
Chilean cuisine is very diverse. Among its typical dishes we have: Empanada de Pino (dough stuffed with onion, meat, raisins and olives), Pastel de Choclo (made mainly of corn with meat, eggs and olives), Porotos Granados (tender potatoes cooked with gourd and corn), Cazuela de Ave o Vacuno (clear soup of chicken or beef with boiled vegetables), besides those typical of each region.

Lastly, you can not fail to taste the exquisite Mote con Huesillos, a dessert elaborated from a boiled fruit and mote wheat.
