HOW TO GET THERE
Take an international flight to Santiago de Chile and connect with a domestic flight that takes 2 1/2 hours to Calama. Staff from Explora will transfer visitors on a van to Explora IN ATACAMA, on a trip lasting approx 1 hour.
The weather is magnificent throughout the year with over 90% of the days with shinning sun. In winter (June, July and August) the average temperature during the day goes from 9º C (48º F) to 24º C (75º F); the days are very nice and lure to lie on the sun corridors.
In summer (January, February and March) the average temperature fluctuates between 13º C (55º F) and 25º C (77º F), reaching highs of 32º C (90º F): a rather hotter weather that invites for a good siesta before setting off for the afternoon explorations. The so called altiplano winter (between January and March) brings along occasional downpours.
WHAT TO PACK
the explorations require sports clothes, including shorts, bathing suits and footwear proper for hiking. Rather warmer clothes are needed to climb the summits or walk during the night. Explora recommends bringing all that is needed to protect you from the sun.
Inside the hotel requires informal clothing. Explora regards elegance as an inner virtue.
There is fresh water in almost the entire territory, although it is advisable to drink bottled water in rural areas.
San Pedro de Atacama has neither hospitals nor clinics, there is just a medic post located in the plaza that is equipped to respond to basic emergencies. In case of a major emergency you have to go to the City of Calama, to the Dr. Carlos Cisternas Hospital, located on the homonymous
Chilean cuisine is very diverse. Among its typical dishes we have: Empanada de Pino (dough stuffed with onion, meat, raisins and olives), Pastel de Choclo (made mainly of corn with meat, eggs and olives), Porotos Granados (tender potatoes cooked with gourd and corn), Cazuela de Ave o Vacuno (clear soup of chicken or beef with boiled vegetables), besides those typical of each region.
Lastly, you can not fail to taste the exquisite Mote con Huesillos, a dessert elaborated from a boiled fruit and mote wheat.
