Rainy on both sides of the border during the southern hemisphere winter season. There may be snow at the border crossing, but it is always open to traffic. During the southern hemisphere season there are occasional rainfalls, but around 70% of the days are sunny. Temperatures rarely rise above 28°C.
WHAT TO PACK.
For the trip we recommend to bring rain proof jackets and trousers, thermally insulated shirts, polar windbreaker, headgear with earmuffs, thermally insulated gloves and socks, shorts, sandals, sunglasses with UV protection, sunscreen and blocks and chap sticks (minimum factor 30) for your face and lips, insect repellent, sunshade, water proof hiking boots (if new, we recommend that you break them in before coming.), and other warm clothing.
Visitors from most countries will not need visas to enter either Chile or Argentina. Enquire at your closest Chilean or Argentinean consulate. You will mostly just need a valid passport. However, Chileans and other citizens of Mercosur only need their National ID card to enter both countries.
In Argentina the clocks are one hour before Chile from the second Saturday of March till the second Saturday of October. The rest of the years there are no differences in time.
In most places you will find safe drinking water but we recommend sticking to bottled water in order to avoid unpleasantries.
In most cities you will find excellently equipped hospitals and clinics with 24-hour emergency services.
The Chilean cuisine is very varied, we can mention a few typical dishes such as: Empanada de Pino (fried dough pastries filled with onions, meat, raisins and olives), Pastel de Choclo (corn pie prepared with sweet corn, meat, eggs and olives), Porotos Granados (tender beans cooked with squash and sweet corn), Cazuela de Ave or Vacuno (chicken or beef broth with cooked vegetables), apart from the typical regional local dishes.
Lastly, you must try the exquisite Mote con Huesillos, a dessert made out of cooked fruit and sweet corn.
