Beauty is literally in full view along the Southern Roadway. You will be part of a natural landscape, perhaps one of the few remaining virgin wildernesses in the world.
This area possesses the most productive and least exploited rivers, lakes and streams in the world. Fishing conditions and results are highly varied, ranging from crystalline streams suitable for fly fishing, through the capture of large specimens of trout in the lakes, to salmon catches weighing up to 13 kilos in gigantic emerald-green rivers.
On Lake Bertrand and the Baker river there are countless riverbank and lakeshore areas suitable for practicing any mode of fly fishing.

Later you will walk another hour towards the extraordinary Explorers Glacier, which descends directly from San Valentín Hill (which, at 4000 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain in Patagonia). This is also a spectacular opportunity to take photos and film.
Lake Leones on Horseback: Full day.

After the tour, participants can get out of the truck to view the actual source of the river, whose strong flow is surrounded by high and imposing mountains covered by abundant native vegetation. The trip then continues to its next destination, a wide plateau from which it´s possible to view the confluence of the Baker River with the Nef River (which flows from the Northern Ice Fields). You will have ample opportunities to take photos and observe the mountain range.

the mouth of Lake General Carrera and 18 kilometers from the source

is 264 km., and the trip takes about five hours.
To get there from Argentina, one has to take Route 40 to Los Antiguos and then cross to Chile skirting the lake towards Chile Chico. From Chile Chico there are 120 km to Mallin Colorado, this stretch taking three hours, along the southern shore of Lake General Carrera. A very worthwhile trip.
Climate
The climate is variable. In a couple of days one can experience every season in the year. However, the presence of the Ice Fields to the west causes condensation of the humidity brought by the Pacific Ocean, giving the area a pretty dry climate, with many clear days and rainfall featuring short showers mostly at night (800 mm a year). The maximum temperature is around 30ºCelsius and the summer minimum is 4ºC. Due to the latitude, summer days are very long, with around 16 to 18 hours of light.
Fishing season
Second Friday of November to the first Sunday of May.
Recommendations on what to take with you
Sunscreen
Dark non-reflecting sunglasses
Your normal medicines (there are no pharmacies here)
A good hat
Waders
Comfortable and durable shoes
Short and long trousers
Short-sleeved Polo-necked shirt
Sweaters and a Jacket
Photo camera
First aid kit
Take along a 5 or 6 Southbend or Shakespeare rod, and matching reel. It is important that the rod and reel should be the same weight.
You'll also need backing, line and some leaders.
Also take flyline, which can be Scientific Anglers, Cortland or Teeny brand.
It should be a floating line, with the same weight as the reel and rod.
Sinking line: it has to be of the fast-sinking type.
This can be the kind that sinks completely, or only sinks at the tip, where the fly is placed. The latter is called a "sink tip" (make sure it is a long one, some 25 feet long, and fast-sinking).
The Goretex brand ventilated waders and boots are the best.
The neoprene boots are good also, but are very hot to wear on sunny days.
The wading boots are made with rubber and felt soles. The felt-soled type are better for obtaining a purchase on slippery rocks, and the rubber-soled type are better for fishing from a boat.
