Getting
to
Punta Arenas is not difficult. From Santiago,
Chile's capital city, you can get there directly by air. It is also
possible to get there by road or sea, using combined itineraries,
crossing Argentine Patagonia when travelling by land.
By Air
The Carlos Ibañez del Campo International Airport, located
20 kilometers from
Punta Arenas, receives regular
flights from Santiago and Puerto Montt, capital of the Lake Region.
From the airport one can board buses, mini-buses and taxis for
Punta
Arenas. The trip lasts 30 minutes. There are also regional
flights to the cities of Porvenir and Puerto Williams, with a choice
of connections through to Argentine Patagonian cities.
By sea
First you have to get to Puerto Montt, the departure point
for boats that cross the Patagonian channels to
Punta Arenas.
By land
This is a long and arduous journey along Route 255 (Monte
Aymond -
Punta Arenas). It lasts about 36 hours,
and one has to go through Argentine territory.
Ç
From Santiago one
goes to Osorno, capital of the province by the same name in the
Lake District, located over 900 kilometers to the south. The buses
that will take you to
Punta Arenas leave from this
city.
