Getting to Puerto Montt is not difficult; what is difficult though, in almost every case, is tearing oneself away from this cozily inviting city, located 1,044 km south of Santiago, Chile's capital.

One can get to the Lake Region Capital by air, land or sea, so there is no possible excuse for not visiting it. It's just a matter of choosing the mode of travel that suits you best and starting off on the adventure.

BY AIR

Flights from Santiago arrive daily at the El Teruel airport, located 16 km from the center of Puerto Montt. The trip lasts less than two hours. This route is covered by Lan Chile and Ladeco airlines. There are also regional itineraries to the north and south of the country.

BY LAND

From Santiago along Panamericana Route 5 South highway, ending up in the city of Quellon, province of Chiloe. The trip lasts about 12 hours. On the way there are places of interest, such as Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Lago Todos, Los Santos, Saltos del Rio Petrohue and others.

Buses arrive every day from Santiago and other regional capitals. Fares range according to quality levels. The land terminus of Puerto Montt is located on Juan Soler Manfredini street (no number).
One can also get there from Argentina (Bariloche and Mendoza) through the Cardenal Antonio Zamore International Pass on Route 215 Puyehue and then on 109 southwards (288 km in all); you can also go through the Los Libertadores Pass.

BY SEA

As indicated in its name, the city has quite a busy port, where ships leave for the southernmost areas of Chile, and cruise ships anchor, especially in summer.

TRANSFERS IN PUERTO MONTT

The taxicab is the easiest and most highly recommended way of moving around in Puerto Montt. The service is safe and efficient, and the fares are affordable. Another advantage is that this way of traveling enables the visitor to reach the more remote attractions without hassle.

If you are looking for cheaper transport modes for your city trips, you can opt to travel by city bus or "colectivo", an oversized taxi-type vehicle that covers fixed shuttle routes, or if you prefer, to use the micro-bus services on fixed routes. If your wallet is fairly limp, these two are good options.

Another possibility is renting a self-driven car in any of the local or international dealerships operating in the Los Lagos region capital. Requirements are not complicated. Once behind the wheel, remember speed limits are 50 km/hour in town and 100 km/hour on the highway.
