Santiago, the Chilean capital city, is the starting point for the
trip to
Chiloe. The first part of the journey takes
you to Puerto Montt, 1,044 km to the south. It takes 2 hours by
plane or more than 14 hours by bus to get there.
From Puerto Montt, capital of De Los Lagos region, Panamerican Highway
Route "5 South" should be taken up to Pargua, where vessels shuttle
to
Chiloe Island every day and night during the
high season (December to February).
The ticket fare is US$ 2, unless you have rented a vehicle (car or pickup truck) in which case you will be charged around US$ 10 (each way) to take it to the island.
The trip takes 30 minutes. The first contact with the archipelago is the town of Chacao.
TRANSFERS IN CHILOE
Moving from one place to another across the island geography and visiting all its interesting "nooks and crannies" is not a very complicated task.
Both in Castro and Ancud, the main towns in
Chiloe,
there is public
transport as well as taxis.
