USEFUL INFORMATION
What
clothes should I take to Calama?
Since the temperature changes significantly from day (sunny and warm) to night (below zero Celsius), it is a good idea to take light clothes as well as warm ones. You should take cotton turtlenecks, shorts, bathing costumes, thick socks, gloves, pullovers, jackets, shoes for trekking and comfortable sneakers. Also, don't forget to pack your sunglasses, sunscreen, a flashlight, binoculars, videotape and a photographic camera, among other things.
Will I have any problem with my credit cards and traveler's
checks?
In Calama, the main credit cards are usually accepted
without any problem in every commercial establishment. The same
is true of travelers' checks. However, we suggest taking cash (especially
pesos) since credit cards are hardly used in the towns in the desert.
If you don't have any cash when you arrive in Calama,
you should go to the bank agency ATMs, where you will be able to
draw all the money you need.
Is it difficult to change one's money in Calama?
You will not have any problem with currency exchange. The dollar and the euro are easily changed. It is recommended to carry out all transactions in authorized foreign exchange offices, banks, hotels or shopping malls.

Banks are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Most stores and shopping malls open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Saturday they are open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Generally, shops are closed on Sundays.

The water in Calama is quite drinkable. However,
in nearby towns, water may not be as safe. It's always better, and
the general rule among travelers, to drink bottled water.
Should I leave a tip?
Usually in restaurants 10 per cent of the total bill is left as a tip. When taking a taxi, the number that appears on the meter is usually rounded upward and the driver keeps the change.
Is it possible to get mountain sickness?
Since Calama is located 2500 meters above sea level.
it is not frequent for visitors to get mountain sickness. You shouldn't
get scared if you have a slight headache or if you get agitated
while walking. However, you could get mountain sickness if you go
to the attractive nearby villages since some of them are above 4,000
m altitude. You should have light meals before these excursions
and take pills against mountain sickness.
Where should I go in case of robbery?
Calama is a calm and quiet city. Probably you won't
have to face a problem of this sort. But in case it happens, you
can call 133 toll free, go to the Chilean police station located
at Av. Granaderos 2490, or call 342-771.
For your security we recommend you not to walk in secluded areas or late at night. You should avoid wearing expensive jewels, take only the money you need and keep an eye on your belongings.
Will I be able to phone my country?
The city has a network of public phones you can use to make local and international calls with coins or cards. Also, most hotels have phones in their rooms as well as offering Internet service.
