ANTARCTICA
ATTRACTIONS
A continent inhabited by penguins, seals, walruses, killer whales, blue whales and krill, a small shrimp-like crustacean. A "land" of eternal ice sheets where everything amazes one. Antarctica is "something else", a place of frozen nature, unfamiliar to man.
Travelers arriving in the Chilean Antarctic can visit the following places:
- Fildes Bay
This bay hosts a large number of penguins and marine species. Here one can find the Port Captaincy of the Chilean Navy, Professor Julio Escudero Base of the Chilean Antarctic Institute, the Cosmic Radiation Lab (LARC) of the Chilean Air Force's Presidente Frei Base, and the population center Villa Las Estrellas, where tourists can spend the night.BR>
During one's stay at the bay, one can visit the penguin rookery on Ardley Peninsula (after due permission by the commander of the base), the Chinese "Great Wall" base (5 kilometers from Frei base), the Russian Bellingshausen base (500 meters away) and the Uruguayan Artigas base (12 kilometers away)
This bay is located on King George Island, together with the peninsula of the same name.
- Presidente Frei Base
This base was founded in 1969 as the Presidente Frei Meteorological Station. In 1980 the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh airport was built and in 1984 Villa Las Estrellas was inaugurated.
This complex constitutes one of the main scientific research centers and one of the main weather and navigation centers in the Antarctic.
- Villa Las Estrellas
This is the main town and logistics area for the scientific and tourist expeditions that are carried out here.
The "Villa" has a school, a bank and post office, a souvenir store, a chapel and a hostelry.
